FACING THE FIELD
TODAY!
It is
the field we have to face if we are to fulfil the ministry
we have received from the Lord. One is thankful for the renewed
emphasis on the fact that “the field is the world”
Is every Christian a missionary? However with the world emphasis, there is a danger of losing sight of the specific missionary task. The Holy Spirit is still calling “Barnabas’s & Saul’s” and woe betide them if they do not respond to that call, and the church if it fails to set them apart for their specific work.
Is there a field to face? The answer is clear when asked standing before the
Great Commission. The King’s commission constitutes our standing orders until He
returns in glory, of that there can be no doubt. The Lord will enable you for
many of the adjustments you will have to make. Remember the great promises
remain true even when you arrived in your field of service and long afterwards –
Ps 32: 8 “I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shall
go; I will guide thee with mine eyes.”
Why are the ranks unfilled when any one of the Lord’s soldiers should count it a privilege to enlist? The hour is uncertain. From the days of Paul to the present day missionaries, their work has thrived on crisis situations. They have always been certain that “it is the last hour” 1 John 2:18 and that very fact has urged them on. Too often today, uncertain situations rather than being accepted as opportunities for service are treated as an excuse for holding back. Why in this last hour are they not more eager to serve? Again is there not an unhealthy preoccupation with “wind and clouds”? Ecclesiastes 11:4 “He who observes the wind will not sow; and he who regards the clouds will not reap”
Can we imagine the Apostle Paul holding back because of the uncertain
political future of the country? Are the soldiers of the cross only prepared to
serve in sunlit places? It is hard enough when fellow- Christians seek to
hinder the servants of the Lord launching forth to countries where the situation
is described as potentially explosive, but it is heart breaking when potential
missionaries yield to such
defeatism.
